Terms of use
What you may do with stak.sh, its data and its API. The short version: read and cite freely, reuse the scores with attribution, don't mirror the site or resell what it collects.
Who runs the site
stak.sh is run by the operator named in the Impressum. These terms apply to everyone who uses the site, its feeds and its API. Using the site means accepting them.
Using the site
The site is free to use. It is offered as is: the numbers come from third-party platforms and from profiles developers write themselves, and they can be late, incomplete or wrong. Nothing here is advice; check a tool yourself before you build on it. The site may change or be withdrawn at any time.
Accounts and profiles
A profile belongs to the developer who publishes it, and they are responsible for it. By publishing a profile you allow stak.sh to show it, to count it in community statistics and to include it in feeds and previews for as long as it is public. Keep it truthful and your own. Profiles that break the law, someone's rights or these terms may be removed, and accounts that abuse the site may be closed. The privacy policy explains what personal data is processed.
Data and license
The shares, scores, ranks, changes, relations and migrations on stak.sh are stak.sh's own work, computed from many sources. They are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0: quote them, chart them, put them in your own tools and answers, as long as you name stak.sh and link to the page or the site. "Source: stak.sh" with a link is enough.
The sources' own numbers, such as downloads, stars, pageviews, search interest or mentions, are shown on the site's charts for reference. They remain the property of the platforms they come from and are subject to those platforms' terms. They are not licensed for reuse here and are not served by the API. Survey results carry their own licenses, listed on the methodology page.
API
The JSON API under /api/ is there for your scripts and assistants to look up a tool before a decision. It serves the same aggregated numbers as the site, under the same license:
GET /api/tools/<slug>: a tool's latest scores, its category, what its users also use and where they came from and went to. One request answers the usual question.GET /api/categories/<slug>/scores: the latest scores of every tool in a category.GET /api/series?tools=a,b&lens=adoption: weekly shares for up to five tools. Lenses: adoption, attention, community, index.GET /api/tools/<slug>/relatedand/migrations: the community data on their own.
Limits per client address: 30 requests per minute and 500 per day. The site's own charts are counted separately, with more room. Over the limit the API answers 429 with a Retry-After header. Answers are cacheable for an hour; please honour that. No key is needed.
What is not allowed: fetching the catalog in bulk, mirroring or periodically copying the data, offering it on through another API or dataset, selling it, or working around the limits with several addresses. Raw source values are not part of the API; the raw chart mode and the display-only charts answer only the site's own pages. The API may change or go away; endpoints are listed here when they change.
Crawlers and assistants
Search engines and answer engines are welcome to crawl the public pages and to cite them. robots.txt says which paths are off limits, and llms.txt describes the site for assistants. Please identify your crawler, keep to a reasonable pace, and link to the page you took a number from. Crawlers that ignore robots.txt or load the site heavily may be blocked.
Liability
stak.sh is liable without limit for intent and gross negligence and under mandatory law. For slight negligence it is liable only for breaches of duties the site cannot work without, and then only up to the damage that was foreseeable when the duty arose. The site is free of charge and there is no promise of availability.
Changes and law
These terms may be updated; the current version is always at this address. The law of the Federal Republic of Germany applies, without the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. For consumers, the mandatory protections of their home country still apply.
